At many abandoned places, it is prohibited to remodel an existing building because of the complexity of its intended use. The building might have less foundation, exterior walls and roof may not be enough to remodel. The initial examination of the existing building should include determining the age of the building and obtaining construction sketches, drawings, and specifications of the building if they are available.

St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel (London, England)
In the 1860’s it was built as a train station to accommodate the booming railway industry. It was also used as a railway office for British rail. It was used as rail office until 1980 before the building was deemed unsafe and got shutdown. After a decade the exterior of the building was restored and renovated to keep the beautiful architecture alive. In the early 20th century, two large British companies transformed the place in a luxury hotel and made it famous worldwide with its beautiful interiors and exteriors.
La Fabrica (Barcelona, Spain)
It was a cement factory at times. This place is near Barcelona, Spain. The place is around 33,368 sq ft and was built after World War I. In the 1970s, it was renovated by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. He set up a garden at the top of the building. The goal was to bring greenery to the place while keeping the existing structure.
The American Brewery (Baltimore, Maryland)
It was built in 1887. The American brewery was a one-of-its-kind place in Maryland. Beer production was active until 1920, after that they had to shut down the operation during the time of prohibition. Later the place was completely abandoned, but the name itself was famous amongst the people of Maryland, and it has a historical significance which made the name into the National Register of historic places of the USA in 1973. After a long journey in 2012 once the owners decided to start renovation work of the building, which eventually got completed later that year and the place is now used for community gatherings. The place even won the award for the 2010 Baltimore heritage preservation.
Kings Theatre (Brooklyn, New York)
King’s Theatre in Brooklyn, New York was opened in early 1929. At times it was one of the leading movie theatres in New York. But due to leakage in the roof, ventilation and water issues, it got shut down after five decades of operation in 1977. The 3500+ seat theatre was closed for a long time until it was reopened to the public in 2015. The theatre was one of the five wonder theatres in New York, so the remodeling of theatre had to be done in such a way that gives a look of the classic movie palace. In 2014 the ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to reopen the theatre with an opening performance that was held by Diana Ross.
Venetian-Gothic Water Tower (London, England)
In the southeast of London, the water tower was built in 1877 as Venetian Gothic Water Tower. After several years the structure became a Hospital, and over the years the tower deteriorated due to the lack of maintenance. Decades after, the property was bought by Leigh & Graham Osbourne and they transformed it into a modern house while keeping the old look. Now the entire London skyline can be viewed from the property.
